The major advantages of using fiber optic systems for space are ease of integration, EMI/EMC concerns, and reducing the SWaP (Size Weight and Power) load.. Among the applications of optical modulators in photonic space payloads are the generation and distribution of high frequency local oscillators and the photonic RF frequency-conversion achieved by driving the modulator with the microwave signals. Next generation space vehicles and satellites will utilize optical network bus for distribution and integration of onboard and external data and communications systems.
